Amir Hamzah will hold a PC today at 5pm to discuss the rationalisation of diesel subsidies

PETALING JAYA – Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan is holding a Sunday (9 June) press conference to discuss the rationalisation of diesel subsidies.

The event will be held in the Finance Ministry Office at Putrajaya at 5pm.

Amir Hamzah stated on May 24 that the government loses RM1bil a year in diesel subsidies, and RM4.5mil a week due to leakages.

He said that the targeted diesel subsidy is one of the key reforms under the Ekonomi madani framework. This will ensure sustainable fiscal management, and address serious leakages in the system without compromising rakyat welfare.

The Prime Minister Datuk seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the rationalisation of fuel subsidies in a speech to the nation on May 21. He said that diesel subsidies would be removed for “the wealthy and foreigners”.

He said that the diesel subsidy would be first rationalised on the peninsula and then implemented in Sabah, Sarawak, but did not mention a timeline.

Anwar stated that subsidies will be maintained for diesel-powered commercial trucks and public transportation to prevent a drastic rise in the price of goods and services.

Subsidised diesel control system (SKDS) will cover 23 types of goods transport vehicles and 10 types of public transportation vehicles including buses, taxis and other vehicles.

Diesel subsidies will continue to be available for certain categories fishermen.

Anwar said that cash assistance would be provided to individuals who are eligible and own diesel-powered private vehicles. This includes small traders, farmers, etc.
