EC holds meeting to discuss Sungai Bakap State by-election

PUTRAJAYA – A special meeting of the Election Commission (EC), is taking place at Menara SPR to discuss important dates and issues for the Sungai Bakap by-election.

The meeting, which was chaired at 10am by EC vice chairman Dr Azmi Sharrom, aimed to establish important dates for the by-election, such as the date the election writ will be issued, the nomination day, the polling day, the electoral list to be used, and other preparations.

Datuk Datuk Ikmalrudin is present at the meeting, and the Commission will also hold a conference of the press after the meeting.

Ikmalrudin said on May 27 that the meeting would take place today, after receiving an official notification by the Penang State Legislative Assembly Speaker, Datuk Law Choo Kiang. This was in response to the sudden vacancy at the Sungai Bakap State seat following the death of Nor Zamri Latiff, the incumbent, on May 24.

Ikmalrudin stated that as per Clause (5) of Article 19 in the Penang State Constitution the vacancy had to be filled within 60 calendar days after the confirmation by the EC.

Nor Zamri (56), died in the Intensive Care Unit of Hospital Seberang Jaya due to stomach inflammation. He had been treated since May 1.
