Indian crooner of Chinese songs Simon Mohan dies

Simon Mohan has died. He was an Indian singer who sang in Chinese in the 90s and released a Mandarin album.

Simon was 64 years old. His real name is Elanjselvan VM Mohan.

Krisna, his 34-year-old eldest child, confirmed that his father died at the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre, in Kuala Lumpur, at around 11am on June 11, 2002.

“He ate with us on Sunday and complained at midnight that he had difficulty breathing. We called an ambulance to transport him to hospital.

He added, “Doctors told us that he was suffering from a viral infection of the lungs and that a sudden drop in oxygen caused his heart to stop.”

Krisna told me that his father was staying in Kuala Lumpur since he suffered a mild stroke about two months earlier in Ipoh.

He said that his mother had died seven years earlier.

Krisna, 30, said that his father was like a friend to him and Rajini.

We ate together, we talked about everything and we travelled. “He was not the conventional father figure, but he was good to us,” said he.

He told me that the body of his father would be returned to their home at Gunung Rapat in Ipoh.

He added, “We’ll hold a wake over three days for him and the funeral on Saturday.”
