Official: 5G is responsible for 5.6 trillion yuan of economic output in China

An official stated that 5G commercialization in China has resulted in a total output of 787.53 billion dollars (786.53 trillion yuan) over the last five years.

Zhao Zhiguo (chief engineer of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, MIIT) released this figure at a forum on mobile communications, citing research by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

He added that 5G also contributed indirectly to 14 trillion yuan of economic output. This shows the great contribution the new technology has made to the high-quality development of the country.

Zhao stated that China has achieved global leader status in 5G infrastructure, with continuous breakthroughs in core technologies and impressive results in the integration between digital and physical applications, since the 6th of June 2019 when 5G commercial licenses were issued.

China accumulated almost 3.75 million base stations by the end of April. That’s about 26 stations for every 10,000 people. China’s 5G patents accounted for more than 42 percent of all world claims.

The 5G technology is widely used by key industries like mining, electricity, healthcare and design.

Zhao said that the MIIT would continue to make efforts in the future to deepen the 5G network coverage and accelerate the expansion 5G applications. It will also actively promote modernization of the Information and Communication Industry.
