Penang LRT project specs come under federal purview, says Loke

Anthony Loke, ( pic ) said that the Transport Ministry will make any decisions on the specifications for the Penang Light Rail Transport (LRT), as this is a Federal Project.

Once the specifications are finalised, the Transport Minister stated that an announcement would be made.

When asked to comment about the statement Zairil Khi Johari, chairman of the state transport and infrastructure committee in the recent assembly made that Penang was looking at a “low-to-medium capacity system” to complete the Penang LRT Mutiara Line Project, Loke replied: “With due respect, I don’t think the state government is entitled to announce the specifications.”

Loke spoke at a Press Conference after the opening of the 57th Asean High-ranking Transport Officials Meeting, held here on Tuesday (June 11, 2016).

Zairil said that the state would not select a system with a large capacity, such as Kelana Jaya LRT Line. This line can accommodate up 30,000 passengers and is not suitable for Penang.

He said that the state would choose a system that is scalable, starting probably with two carriages.

Work on the 29km LRT includes 20 stations including two interchanges at Komtar and Penang Sentral.
