S. Africa promoted into Group 2 after winning Billie Jean King Cup at Kenya

NAIROBI (Xinhua), June 16 – South Africa was promoted to the Europe-Africa Group 2 after their 3-0 win over Kenya in the Billie Jean King Cup Group 3 final here on Saturday night.

Isabella Kruger defeated Angella Okutoyi, the top seed from Kenya, 7-6, 6-1. Gabriella Broadfoot beat Cynthia Wanjala in women’s singles.

Broadfoot and Heike van Vuuren won the doubles match 6-1, 33-6, 10-4.

The first-to-third play-offs of the week-long continental tourney that drew 12 nations have concluded.

After South Africa’s win, Kruger stated: “This year we brought the team spirit together and I think that this week we focused on supporting each day. We are all excited to go back to Group 2.

Okutoyi is the top-ranked Kenyan player in Africa and a candidate to qualify for Paris 2024 Olympics. He admitted that the hosts are disappointed at not being promoted for the second consecutive year.

“This year we did our best, and I felt that this team was stronger than the last but we just came up short. We tried our best but could not deliver. Teamwork is about being there for one another, even in the lows. We hope to get out of group 3 and into group 2 someday,” said the local favorite.

Okutoyi, despite the defeat, praised the fact that Kenya was no longer regarded as the whipping nation of African women’s Tennis.

South Africa has earned promotion to the next stage of the ITF Billie Jean King Cup, which is 61 years old.

After beating the hosts by 2-1, the west Africans finished second and Kenya third.
