Saifuddin: Malaysia and China will deepen National Security Framework

PUTRAJAYA – Datuk seri Saifuddin Ismail, Home Minister, said that Malaysia and China had agreed to further develop the National Security Framework, a move which will benefit the two countries, as well as the region and the entire world.

He said that it was one of many high-impact outcomes achieved by the Malaysia-People’s Republic of China Joint Working Group on Combating transnational crime (5th JWG), which took place on Thursday, June 6, in China. The meeting was presided over by him and Chinese Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong.

He added that both countries expressed their commitment to explore, and lead, cooperation between Asean and China in the areas of economy and social issues, in line with the three main Asean pillars.

In a joint statement with the 5th JWG, he stated that “Also was signed the extension of the Agreement for Cooperation in Combating Transnational Crime” between Malaysia and People’s Republic of China. This agreement is in force until 2034.

The agreement is a master-document that lists over 15 areas of collaboration between the two nations, including the prevention of terrorist activity and extremism. Other areas include illegal gambling, cybercrime and human trafficking.

He said that the two countries had also agreed to finalise immediately several new agreements and documents of cooperation on immigration and extradition issues.

The 5th JWG Meeting also acknowledged the close cooperation that exists between the enforcement agencies of both countries, and pledged to intensify it in accordance with the status of comprehensive and strategic relationships of Malaysia and People’s Republic of China.

He said that this included information sharing, capacity-building, and exchanges of officer placements.

The 5th JWG, established in 2012, is a discussion group under the umbrella of an agreement between Malaysia and China for cooperation in combating transnational crime.

The annual meeting is an expression of Malaysia’s strong relationship with the People’s Republic of China, especially in terms of public order and security.

Saifuddin Nasution will be in China from 5-10 June on a work visit.
