SAR ongoing for man who went to dig for clams on Mersing beach

MERSING: Authorities have launched a search and rescue (SAR) operation to find a local man who went missing while digging for clams along Pantai Tenglu Laut here.

Authorities involved in the operation have identified the missing person as 21-year-old Hafiz Nursalam Ahmad.

Mersing OCPD Supt Abdul Razak Abdullah Sani, who confirmed the incident, said a report was lodged at 12.55am on Tuesday (June 4) morning.

“The victim did not return home after going to search for clams along the beach. He frequently went to the area to look for clams.

“The victim’s family went to the location to search for him as he did not return home on Monday (June 3) evening but they only found his motorcycle and slippers,” he said.

Supt Abdul Razak said the SAR operation was launched at around 8am involving personnel from the police, Civil Defence Force, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and Fire and Rescue Department.

Meanwhile, Mersing fire station operation commander Mohamed Zainudin Ahmad said a total of nine firemen and relevant assets were deployed in the operation.

“The operation is still ongoing where we are searching along the shoreline of Pantai Tenglu Laut using boats.

“We are also being assisted by 10 villagers,” he added.
