Sg Bakap Polls: Pakatan will announce its candidate on June 12.

NIBONG TEBAL: On Wednesday (12 June), the unity government will announce its candidate for the Sungai Bakap special election.

Rafizi Rafii Ramli , the Unity Coalition election director (picture), announced this at the PKR Sungai Bakap Service Centre near Jalan Besar on Sunday (9 June).

He said: “We will announce our candidate following the meeting we held on Tuesday, June 11.”

The Star reported recently that Dr Joohari Arifin, 60, a former teacher, was the frontrunner for the position of candidate.

Joohari, who was a Nibong Tebal M.P., used to be in close contact with Fadhlina, the Education Minister, when it came to her party and parliamentary duties.

Sungai Bakap’s state seat became vacant after the death of Nor Zamri Latiff (56), a first term assemblyman. This occurred on 24 May.

According to the records of the Election Commission from the previous state election, Sungai Bakap has 38 409 voters. The majority is Malays (59.36%). This is followed by Chinese (22.54%), Indians (17.39%), and others (0.71%).

On Thursday, June 6, the Election Commission announced that voting will take place on July 6 and nomination day is on June 22.

Nurhidayah Rose, the Pakatan Harapan candidate from Pakatan Tebal, was defeated by Nibong Tebal PAS’s leader Nibong Tebal in the state elections of August 2023.
