Terengganu Customs Seizes Smuggled Cigarettes Worth Over RM680,000

KUALA BESUT – The Terengganu Customs Department busted a syndicate smuggling RM682,550 worth of cigarettes through a raid conducted here on Monday (10 June).

Mohd. Nadzri Arifin, its director, said that the raid was carried out by a team at 7am via an inspection of a lorry.

Our team, acting on intelligence provided by the East Intelligence Zone Customs Field Operations Combat Team Cobra, conducted a raid near the state assemblyman’s service centre in Kuala Besut and found a lorry without its driver.

“We found the lorry laden with boxes containing cigarettes that are suspected of being prohibited import goods. They were left there,” said he in a Friday (June 14, 2016) statement.

Mohd. Nadzri reported that they had confiscated 850,000 cigarettes with an estimated worth of RM110.500, and RM572,050 of taxes.

He said that the syndicate used bonded or closed type lorries to distribute smuggled tobacco to markets outside Terengganu.

He said that “the lorry has been confiscated and taken at Kemaman Customs Office Branch Enforcement Station,” adding that this case is under investigation in accordance with Section 135(1)(d). of the Customs Act, 1967.

Mohd Nazri has urged the public not to smuggle anything by calling the toll-free number of the Customs Department.
