The percentage of candidates failing BM and Sejarah is down compared to the previous year

PUTRAJAYA – Deputy Education minister Wong Kah Woh says the percentage of candidates failing the Bahasa Malaysia and History subjects at the recent 2023 Sijil Perajaran Malaysia (SPM), compared to the 2022 examinations, has improved.

The percentage of candidates failing BM in 2023, was 2.5%. History was 5.6%.

He said this after a Malaysian Skills Certificate ceremony held for students with special needs on Tuesday, June 1.

He said that the average grade for both subjects has improved (lower grades are better). In 2022 the average subject grade for BM in comparison to 2023 was 3.95.

“The GPMP score for History showed an improvement, as well. It was 4.63 in 2023 compared to the 4.65 scored in 2022. “We have improved our performance, even though the improvement is very thin,” said he.

He was answering a question about a tweet on X, formerly known as Twitter, claiming that more than 23,000 students failed the History SPM and BM SPM examinations.

The Education Ministry is interested in all feedback regarding the SPM results. We are committed to providing comprehensive materials on all subjects through our dedicated platform Digital Educational Learning Initiative Malaysia.

He said that teachers have access to new materials and are aware of them.

Last year, 395 870 candidates took the national exam.
