Trump’s shortlist of VP candidates is almost exclusively men

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Reuters) – When Donald Trump’s possible running mate was discussed at a Manhattan fundraising event last week the Republican presidential nominee gave high marks to candidates including North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. Senator Tim Scott.

Some wealthy donors suggested that Trump should choose former rival Nikki Haley to be his No. 2. The relationship between them had soured after she challenged him. However, during his presidency, she served as her loyal U.N. Ambassador for two years.

Two donors who were present at the meeting said that Trump, aged 77, dismissed the idea largely and asked the group to move on.

Trump had expressed interest in selecting a woman to be his running mate during the November 5th election. Some allies encouraged him to do this with a view to boosting his popularity among female voters.

Trump’s standing among this important voting bloc has been further muddied by his conviction in New York last week. He was accused of hiding a payment intended to influence the 2016 elections by silencing an alleged pornstar who claimed they had sex when he married. A liaison that he denies.

Nine people, including campaign operatives, donors, and lobbyists, who spoke with Trump in the last few weeks say that his current list of VPs is almost exclusively male.

Some of these people stated that Burgum and South Carolina Scott are still in the running, but U.S. Two people have said that Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas and U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik from New York are dark horses.

Three people familiar with the matter have confirmed that Trump’s team sent vetting material to the top candidates. NBC News was first to report this. Reuters reported that Rubio, Burgum, and Stefanik were among the candidates who received materials.

Sources have emphasized that vice-presidential deliberations are fluid, and new names can enter or exit the discussion quickly.

Trump said that there was a “good possibility” he would announce his running mate during the Republican National Convention, which will be held in Milwaukee mid-July. His campaign refused to provide specifics about the search.

Brian Hughes, senior adviser to Trump, said that anyone who claims to know when or who President Trump will select his vice president is lying unless it is Donald J. Trump.

All potential vice-presidential candidates declined to comment on the issue or refused to respond to any requests for comments.

Trump’s popularity has been significantly higher among men during his tenure in office, and also in his campaign for 2024. Many in his circle are keen to close this gender gap. Trump told NBC in September that he liked “the concept” of a female running mate.

Women will decide the outcome of this elections. A woman is the only solution to Trump’s problems, according to a source who was briefed about the discussions. She lamented that so few women had been seriously considered.

According to nine people who were in touch with Trump or his advisors, some of the women Trump considered for this year’s Republican ticket made mistakes that removed them from contention.

Many campaign financiers have urged Trump to choose Haley, who is a traditional conservative with longstanding connections to the donor community. However, other advisers, including Donald Trump Jr. the president’s oldest son, have publicly resisted, according to one source.

Haley is among the few prominent Republicans who have remained silent since Trump’s conviction last week. Haley was Trump’s final rival in the contentious Republican primaries, but she said in May that she would vote for Trump in November.
