Woman and boyfriend claim trial after changing plea in case of child neglect leading to death

SEREMBAN: When the case was brought up at the Sessions Court, a woman and her lover who had pleaded guilty to neglecting their three-year old daughter in April changed their plea.

Noraini Haron and Mohd Shamsua Imsrak, both 42 years old, demanded trial when the charges were read again to them by the interpreter in front of Judge Meor Sulaiman Ahmad Tarmizi.

Noraini’s lawyer Ramesh Lachmanan informed the court before the proceedings began that Noraini had changed her plea.

The couple were charged for committing the crime between March 18-24, this year from 12pm to 6.45pm at a Port Dickson house. The couple faces charges under Section 31.1(a) of Child Act 2001. If convicted, they could face up to 20-years in prison and a fine as high as RM50,000 or both.

Mohd Sulaiman, the judge who asked Mohd Sulaiman if Mohd Khairul had legal representation in court, replied that he didn’t. The judge told him to hire a lawyer, and that the next hearing would be on July 12.

Ramesh, Ramesh’s lawyer, had earlier requested that the court set aside the arrest warrant against Noraini issued for her absence at the previous court hearing on May 2. He explained that Noraini had been told to appear with her bailor on May 8. The court granted Ramesh’s request.

Noraini’s RM20,000 bail allowed her to remain in jail. Mohd Khhairul, an assistant in a workshop with six children, was unable to pay the bail. Noraini has two children and is currently unemployed.

Noor Syafina Radzuan is the prosecutor in this case.
